Roadtrip 2016 Fall: Vancouver - Yakima - Bend - John Day River - Port Orford - Florence - Seaside - Vancouver

Day 26 - Otter Point, Gold Beach North Jetty, Nesika Beach

The rough life of an Oregon Coast picnic table.

Surf warnings are up today, and they aren't kidding. The swells look like 20 footers.

The run-in to Otter Point. The place really doesn't look special from the parking lot, but is actually one of the most spectacular areas in all of Oregon. Its location is unmarked on the highway, and there are no rules and regulations, much less marked trails. We consulted the locals about safe routes. There are plenty of hazards.

Headlands grasses loom over the battered rocks below.

The cliffs are totally rotten and undercut, so staying back from edges is just smart.

The foreshore is accessible, but waves are breaking over top of it right now.

Russ and Emma strike a pose at this very amazing place.

I like this optical illusion - what seems like a canyon and mountain range is actually a little stream and a craggy rock.

Emma is reminded of last year's adventures out on the slickrock in Arizona.

Peeking down into the cove, wave are breaking over the top of that seastack.

A little waterfall spills over the lip of a hanging swamp.

mini cascades - almost seems like a tropical scene.

The Gold Beach Jetty - yup - it's been rainin' good round here..

The very dangerous Rogue sand bar - tricky for boats - a happy place for gulls.

Here at the Rogue River, there are Rules and Regulations. I really like the friendly advice about deadly waves. No such advice at Otter Point.

A small installation along the river banks - interesting.

The sea foam tries to swallow Emma's ball. We rescue it just before the foam wins.

Suddenly, we are caught in a blinding Antarctic white squall, bringing snow and a glacial icecap to our beach. Wendy is astonished to find penguins on the ice floes.

The icecap retreats, leaving us to a nice, peaceful Oregon sunset.

Of course, there is only one sensible reason to go to the beach. Play ball!

The fog settles in for sunset - the air is pink everywhere.
